CONTEXT

As part of Innovative Design, we collaborated with Pulse UCLA on a website redesign project. The primary goal was to revamp their existing website to better align with their mission and cater to the needs of their medical community. We engaged in an in-depth discussion with them to gain insights into their current challenges and identify the specific areas that required improvement.

WHY WAS A REDESIGN NEEDED?

  • The website was built using Wix, which is a website builder that is difficult to customize

  • Information was displayed with a one-page scroll view, making users to navigate back to a specific section they previously viewed, leading to frustration

  • The visuals were inconsistent, making the design cluttered and difficult to navigate

THE REDESIGN

Shown below is a side by side comparison of the old and redesigned version of the website. Some of the key changes include improved information architecture as well as a minimalistic design with consistent visuals.

THE REDESIGN PROCESS

Previous State

I initiated the project by charting the existing information arrangement of the website. Collaborating with the team, I restructured the information layout to enhance its user-friendliness and intuitiveness. Pages of the website are highlighted in purple, with their respective sections outlined below. The objective was to guarantee swift and comprehensible access to necessary information for users visiting the site.

New State

Since the biggest change we decided to do was removing the one-page scroll view but rather allowing the user to navigate through each relevant page they need, we decided to keep the most essential pages in the nav bar. During the initial scoping call, our client expressed that the most important improvement Pulse needs is the resources and knowledge behind shadowing. We decided to separate departments and case studies into two separate pages, accessible through a drop down bar underneath "shadowing". This way, the user can already anticipate that they will be receiving information regarding shadowing opportunities only.
