CONTEXT
I joined a team of 4 designers and participated in the 2022 Rice Designathon. I had three days to research and design, to create a final prototype of an app or website that addresses a specific problem. Out of two given prompts—lifestyle or fintech—my team chose lifestyle.
PROBLEM SPACE
Although many people strive to improve their relationship with their skin, individuals lack the knowledge, support, and inclusion needed to find products that personally fit them.
They tend to struggle with the following:
Journey
Social media often only shows the before and after pictures of skin care and not the journey of recovery.
Awareness
Individuals lack the knowledge of the product ingredients and how to find affordable products
Support
Individuals seek a community of people who share the same skin problems as them
Inclusion
want to know what products are right for them. We want to disrupt the “one-size-fits-all” notion with skincare.
THE QUESTION
How can we enhance the order management system to reduce errors and improve the efficiency of delivering produce for clients?
USER RESEARCH
What would the end-user want?
Our chosen method of user research was to send out surveys to as many students on campus as possible within a day, so we could gather our target audience’s first-hand experiences to cater our product towards their needs.
After conducting a total of 41 surveys, we analyzed our findings through affinity mapping to take note of any connections between our participants' needs and feelings around skincare.
MAIN INSiGHTS
1. Users prefer buying skincare products than seeking treatment with professionals as it’s much more affordable.
2. Users tend to seek information about their skin problems on the internet than consulting with professionals because finding trusted professionals are difficult and inaccessible these days.
3. Reading reviews are extremely important before using a product.
Users have difficulties in finding skincare products that match their skin types

Time Management
Since we had a limited time of ~ 36 hours to decide on a project idea, complete user research, and finalize hifi designs, prioritizing tasks, managing time efficiently, and making quick decisions were very important. Delegating tasks and being aware also played a big role in delegating tasks.
Use Your Resources
Despite having a limited and short time to complete the entire design process, adapting to unexpected changes and feedback was crucial in improving the designs. We realized mid-way that mentors, assistants, and other students were willing to help; this constructive criticism played an essential role in checking accessibility in color choices.
Collaboration
Although we are all designers from the same design club, we all have different skill sets and design backgrounds. Before we began designing, we made sure to be understanding of each other's skill level and leverage each member's strengths. Clear communication helped to navigate through challenges quickly and collaborate effectively under time pressure.
